Político radical francés. Fue elegido a la Cámara de Diputados en 1839, pero su insistencia en la necesidad de un gobierno republicano lo aisló de otros izquierdistas. Tras la
Revolución de febrero, bajo su influencia como ministro del interior en el gobierno provisional (1848), por primera vez se llevaron a cabo elecciones parlamentarias bajo el sistema de sufragio universal de hombres adultos. En 1849 exigió el enjuiciamiento de Luis Napoléon (
más adelante
Napoleón III) y encabezó una fracasada insurrección. Huyó a Inglaterra, pero regresó a Francia tras la amnistía de 1870.
